Anyone who has bothered reading this blog might recall the point of it was to get myself into writing mode. It was set up as an outlet to unload some writing ideas, practice actual writing a bit in a context where someone can read it, and talk generally about ideas related to writing. It was also to update on potential writing projects, well book writing projects really. Until recently the list of potential (book) writing projects did stand at:
- A fictional book we shall call for the time being, the imaginative “Book A”. Let me just add such minimal detail as it’s themed around destiny, love, and to an extent, Religion, but is not what you’d call a story about Romance (at least in the traditional sense). – I’ve not thought too much about this one lately but there is some notes locked away somewhere for this which will be useful when needed.
- A fictional book we shall call “Book B”. This one is “dark” in a comical way, slightly sci-fi in context, sort of funny, an “alternative” take on the real world. I first thought of this during an entirely inappropriate moment. For the record, it was not during sex. – For the record I’ve not though too much about this one lately either. It is partly a contextual thing and again I have some notes around this which will be usefull when needed.
- A more factual based book centered around two things, what it means to be American, and what it means to be a Brit. – I have more notes around this, some from recent travels. I have this one on rotation in my minds eye thinking in terms of how I want to do it. I need some more research for this but the spine is virtually there and there are some other parts of the skeleton. This one will be a work in progress for a while which I will dip in and out of. It is do-able though.
- Fictional “Book D”. It’s a sort of black comedy, bit bleak, a slight sci-fi angle (but not much), themed around finding meaning in life, and redemption. It might be a mystery come thriller type thing. – I have notes for this and the spine of the story. Some more thought needed.
You might recall above and this was deliberate, that I put “did stand at”. Over the past few weeks I’ve been mulling over a new story, well three actually, a trilogy of stories which I suppose could in theory form a trilogy of books. Across the three stories would be certain events and characters that across the whole story have larger meaning. On their own in a part of the story they might seem insignificant or unnecessary, but, to paraphrase The Wire, “all the details matter”. For now we’ll call this project the highly original working title of “The Book Trilogy”. Actually I don’t have a better working title at the moment, that can come later. It has a central character and it tells his story. It’s about the uniqueness of this person and how he attempts to lead a normal life, trying to find his place in the world away from his uniqueness. Just falling in love, working out how he can make some sort of contribution, and that sort of thing. However the world has a way of reminding him who he is and apparently shaping him to a different person than who he wants to be. For him this might be inescapable. The uniqueness in question? Well I don’t wish to discuss that here, not yet anyway. No point giving my ideas away for free. I’ll give more details if I pursue this project sure, but once I have made some decent progression.
So what is the latest? The latest is I’ve been thinking a lot about the book trilogy. That to an extent is writing, but in the main, isn’t actually writing it. I’ve got a number of potential projects but what I need to do is actually choose one and focus on it. Concentrate on doing the research I need, and actually write it. Sounds simple doesn’t it? Maybe that’s why I’m writing about it here rather than getting on with it. Is there something else I need to do first? Well there are a couple of writing type books I am reading that perhaps I need to finish first. I’m not sure if that is an excuse or a necessity. There are a couple of external distractions going on right now that I don’t wish to discuss here. Let me just add that they are limiting my time a little. Perhaps that is an excuse too, I could fit in some work! Am I scared to actually start it? Well maybe, I find that with projects sometimes. When I actually make the start and get going I’m fine, but the start itself is a minor (?) mental block. So maybe I should start one then? Yes I suppose I should.
You’ll have to excuse my slight head blurb / rambling here. A small tip, put it in print (either printed page or internet page) so others can read it. Then you have something more concrete to aim for. So with that in mind a very small, high level project plan:
- Finish two of the writing books within the next fortnight.
- Choose one of the fiction projects to develop further. I will be developing the more factual one over time but for now it will be the secondary project.
- Work out a strong spine, main characters, key themes and details.
- Research any parts as necessary but not all, some can be done whilst writing.
- Start the book itself. Put together a chapter and see how it reads / develops
- Make necessary changes (if required) and continue.
I will of course also try and continue to maintain this blog. At least once a week.
