Good musical artist stories

Written By: Mr E - Jun• 28•10

On a previous post I referred to how I find music to be inspiring, and how the stories about artists in music journalism are inspiring in different ways. Here are just a few random examples:

  • Look up the story of Judee Sill. A troubled person who died too young as a consequence of her drug problems. Never quite hit it big which is a shame given the high quality of the small amount of material she left behind. The Wikipedia post doesn’t do justice here so I’m not posting the link. Try this for a review of her material here.
  • Marvin Gaye has a story that would seem “untrue” if created for the plot of a film. You’re probably aware of his music, maybe not his story and what influenced some of the music.
  • This one is not so much about the story of the artist, but how the artist got inspired for the songs. Look into this for the “Bat for Lashes” (Natasha Khan) second album “Two Suns”.
  • Find out about Mark Oliver Everett and his band “Eels”. Read about his story in the book “Things the Grandchildren should know” and try get hold of the BBC documentary “Parallel Worlds, Parallel Lives“. Then listen to some of the music.

These are just a few examples to keep you going. There are thousands more. The point is just to illustrate how the creation of art in all its forms including writing, can be inspired and influenced.
